Beginning Runners - How I Became A Runner

Running has been such an important part of my life for well over 30 years. It has given me energy that I need to do the many things that I need to get done during the day. Running has helped me sort out any problems, it has helped me recover from the loss of loved ones - not to mention has kept me healthy and at a good weight. Here is the story of how I became a runner.

As with many runners, I started running while I was in college as a way to lose some of the weight that I had gained since I started. College life seems to have a way of doing that! Now, I had never been very athletic when I was growing up. Sure, I rode my bike as a kid and I was in the marching band - but never anything like track. In fact, track for girls didn't even start in my area until I was almost out of high school.

So, a friend of mine and I started running. Nothing fancy. We started running around the track at the college. Then, we eventually moved on to the roads. Back then, there was no "runner friendly" clothing like there is now. We ran in cotton and fleece and were happy to do so! But, run we did. We loved it - and continued running throughout the rest of our time in college.

After college, I continued to run. I loved how it made me feel. Then, as the years went by, I started to notice how much healthier I was than many of the people that I hung around with. I got fewer colds (if at all) and just all around felt better. Running made me in a good mood all of the time (OK, most of the time) and gave me lots of energy. I just can't imagine how life would be if I had never headed to the track that first time.

If you find yourself lacking in the energy that you need to get through your day or if you just need to drop a few pounds to feel better overall - I highly recommend that you begin a running program. There are so many ways that running can help you be healthier and actually prolong your life. If you are already a runner - but know of someone who needs to have running in their life - help them to get started.

If you are thinking about beginning a running program - or know of someone who is, I invite you go to Walk To Run and take a look at a program that I put together. This helps Beginning Runners get started correctly.
