Wiggins Inspires a Generation to Polish Their Bike Lights and Shine Once More

Wiggo-Mania Lights up Britain's Roads with Thousands of Bike Lights

2012 has been an incredible year for British cycling, and as a result more people than ever are lighting up the nation's roads with their sparkling bike lights. The fairy tale began on June 30th with the beginning of the Tour de France. On day seven of the gruelling three week competition Britain's Bradley Wiggins donned the coveted race leader's yellow jersey, and didn't lose it for the rest of the competition. At the end of the Tour hundreds of Brits rode to Paris to meet Wiggins on July 22nd, as he rode over the finish line to become the first British man in history to win the Tour de France. Wiggins has become a household name and a national hero almost over-night, and people inspired by his achievements have been pulling their bikes out of the garage and rushing to the roads. Besides felt-tipping on some side burns, here are a couple of tips for getting started on your bike this summer.

Joining Wiggins on the Roads

First things first, make sure you have a good bike. With good road bikes available from around £200, you can feel like a pro without breaking the bank. Basic bikes are often also sold with helmet, lock and bike lights included; a great option if you are a complete novice to the sport. If you're giving a neglected bike a new lease of life, make sure you have it serviced by a specialist. General services start at around £30, and could save you a great deal of trouble further down the line.

Safety First: A Good Helmet and Bright Bike Lights

For beginners it is paramount that you feel safe and confident when on the roads, and there are two simple things you can do to ensure this. Of highest importance is a good quality helmet, something that you mustn't skimp on. Be sure to buy a helmet that is breathable, strong, and most importantly fits well. If unsure, good cycle shops will be able to help you choose a helmet that is right for you. Also on the beginners check list is a set of bright bike lights. When cycling on roads being highly visible to motorists is vital. For cycling on lit urban roads a set of standard LED front and rear lights are sufficient, so longs as they are visible from all angles and feature flash settings. Now you have the bike, the helmet and the bike lights, all you need is some eccentric facial hair and you are ready to join Wiggins on the road!

Stay safe on your bike with a set of bike lights!
