Bike Tubes and Tires - Essential Tips to Help Keep Your Bike Safe and Strong

Knowing about the relationship between bike tubes and tires and finding the right tube for your wheel can be part of the solution when it comes to struggling against bike repairs. We all know how much of a chore it can be to keep fixing bike tires. So wouldn't it be great if we could prevent the damage happening in the first place?

One of the first steps when you buy a new tube is to make you get one that fits your tire and wheel frame. Obviously you want one with the right circumference so that it fits around your wheel.

What many people don't realize though is you also need one with the right thickness. If the tube is too thick, it puts pressure against your wheel making it more prone to burst when you hit something sharp in the road. And of course if it's too thin you're in for a bumpy ride!

When you go to the store, make sure you know what circumference and thickness you're looking for. Ask one of the store attendants, and if in doubt bring your old tube with you.

If you're buying online, keep a measure tape handy and check the measurements on the site.

Bike tire tube maintenance is fairly straightforward. For most of the time your inner tube will be inside the outer tire, and this will be enough to protect it from external damage and wear. If you have to keep it out for an extended period, keep it in a sealed container in a cool, dry area.

Repairing your tubes and tires depends on which is affected. Inner tube repair is fairly easy and can usually be done yourself - a good bicycle repair kit will have all the tools you need.

Outer tire damage is slightly more complicated, and often needs professional help and/or replacement. If in doubt, ask your local bike store for advice.

Keep an eye on the age of your inner tube as well. If it's been several years since you've repaired it, take it out for a look. If it looks worn, it's worth replacing even if it hasn't had any punctures.

Selecting, storing and caring for your bike tubes and tires right will help you in the long run. It becomes easier once you get used to it, and will save you time, energy and money by reducing your need for repairs.
