How to Have a Good Bike Ride

Chances are that some bike rides are better than others. Everyone has days when they don't feel the rhythm of the peddling or the connection with the road. A straight-away looks more like an endurance test and every hill becomes a struggle. There are a few things you can do to have a good bike ride and they involve preparing your body and your mind before heading out.

Plan on where you're going and know what to expect along the way. Being unprepared for the weather, terrain or any type of emergency is one sure way not to have fun.
Set an objective and make it known to all in your riding party. If each cyclist has a different fitness level, make sure to inform everyone of the designated check points at which to meet.
The human body needs good nutrients for energy. Eat a meal high in carbohydrates a few hours before heading out. On route, snack and drink plenty of fluids to avoid muscle cramps and dehydration.
Before starting the bike ride, warm up your muscles and joints. It only takes a few minutes to stretch the hamstrings, lower back and knees. Limber up the shoulders as well since sitting in an upright position for a long time can put stress on the neck.
Take breaks when necessary and avoid standing still. Keep the body warm and the muscles flexible by walking around and doing stretches. To prevent cramping, hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds.
Most important, have fun on your bike trip. Look around and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. If you continuously look down at the road, all bike rides will look the same. Instead, try cycling on a rail trail, a former rail line in which the rails have been removed leaving a scenic pathway hundreds of kilometers long.
Most bike trips are not about speeding to the destination but rather about discovering new locations and routes that otherwise go unnoticed. To have a good bike ride, cyclists need to be prepared for the conditions and to have a proper mindset before venturing out.
