Developed in the late 1800's, the tandem bicycle is a one that is made for more than rider. The riders are seated in a front to back fashion, one behind the other. Commonly known as the bicycle built for two, some tandem bikes accommodate more than two people. Several can accommodate as many as four riders at one time. When out on the beach, kids are often overjoyed to see one, as they are a site to behold. Often used as a beach cruiser, many tourists seem to enjoy riding this kind of bike for sight-seeing.
Used tandem bikes are a great option to think about if looking to purchase a bicycle. Used tandem style bikes have options such as independent pedaling and double steering. There are two kinds of independent pedaling. With the first type, the riders either can independently move the bike wheels, thus all are doing the same amount of work. And with the second kind of independent pedaling, the front rider is steering and pedaling the front wheel, which the rear rider is pedaling the rear tire. In regards to double steering, there is a device that can connect the front handlebar to the rear handlebar, thus giving both riders the ability to steer the bike. When looking for a used one for sale, look through classified ads and peruse garage sales. Since they have been around since the late 1880's, used tandem bikes make a perfect addition to an antique hobbyist's collection.
Tandem bikes come in many different styles. One style that is worth taking into consideration is the lowrider. Since the wheelbase is wider and lower to the ground, the bike is often easier to pedal and to steer for all of the riders. Tandem style bikes also come in a wonderful plethora of colors. Pink is great choice for women's used tandem bikes.
