Four Great Tips for Training a Child to Ride a Bike

Training a child to ride a bike can be and easy or difficult process depending on the child. Some children have greater fear when it comes to learning to ride and it takes them years to develop the courage to do it on their own. Some children are so independent that they pick it up on their own and refuse assistance. Whichever type yours is, fearful, independent, or somewhere in between, here are some tips for teaching a child to ride that could help the process be a success.

Tip Number One: If your child is still pretty young, start him/her on a tricycle. This is a great way to help them learn to pedal and steer without having to worry about balance. If they get good at these two things, it will be easier to learn to ride a normal bike later because they will only need to learn balance. Not all three.

Tip Number Two: One way to teach balance is with training wheels. This is probably the most common. Training wheels allow your child to ride a normal bike while assisting them with balance. You need to be sure though that the training wheels are positioned a little off the ground so that the bike wobbles from side to side. Not only will this help them learn to balance it, it is safe. If the training wheels touch the ground they could mess the balance with the back tire and make it come off the ground. If this happened the child's breaks wouldn't stop them.

Tip Number Three: Another way to help teach balance is by running with your child. This can be the most difficult as it is pretty tiring. The best way to run with your child that still makes them be in control of balancing is by holding their shoulders, not their handlebars. If you hold any part of the bike, you keep it steady. You need to hold them so that they are still in charge of keeping the bike in balance.

Tip Number Four: If you don't like these options, you can always put your child on a bike that is too small for them. This is helpful because they can easily put their feet on the ground and balance themselves if they start to tip. They can practice this until they no longer need to put their feet on the ground.
